Professor Snape

In the vast realm of literature and film, there are moments that transcend their fictional boundaries, leaving an indelible mark on our hearts. Such is the case with the unforgettable scene in the Harry Potter series, where the character I love the most, Professor Snape utters the words, “After all this time? Always.” This pivotal moment, brought to life by the late Alan Rickman’s mesmerizing portrayal, resonates deeply with audiences, touching the very core of our beings. It was in this climactic scene, however, that Rickman’s talent truly shone, and that’s why I would say Snape is loved as much as he was hated.

The scene in question takes place in the final film, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” as Snape reveals the complex and enduring love he held for Harry’s mother, Lily Potter. In that fateful scene, as Professor Snape’s voice trembles with raw emotion, the weight of his unspoken anguish hangs heavy in the air. With tears glistening in his eyes, he exposes the depths of his heart, revealing a love that endured unrequited and unspoken for years. The vulnerability and tenderness in his voice, coupled with the knowledge of his ultimate sacrifice, become an overwhelming force that pierces the viewer’s soul. It is in this heart-wrenching moment that the full extent of Snape’s unwavering devotion masked behind a facade of bitterness and sternness, is unveiled. The floodgates of emotion burst open, and tears cascade down our cheeks as we witness the profound tragedy of a love so profound, it extends far beyond the boundaries of life and death. We see tears from a man, who we thought was the toughest in the world. Yeah, you got it right. Tough men cry too… Oh, God, I can’t help but tremble when I write these…

The transformative power of this scene lies not only in its portrayal of Snape’s character but also in its ability to change lives. As I reflect upon its impact on me, I realize that it opened my eyes to the profound beauty and complexity of the human experience. It taught me that love can transcend boundaries and that our actions, even in the face of adversity, can shape the lives of others. I defer with Snape only in one aspect. Love and affection have to be shown and exhibited; What use is money if it’s kept dead inside an almirah? Similarly, what use is love if you don’t show it to the people you love? Although the situations of the movie don’t allow him to do so, I can only imagine how the story would’ve turned if he were of a different kind. Ah, sad, life has its own dirty games to play.

This scene resonated with me on a profoundly personal level. Teaching, being my favourite profession, I’ve always looked up to Prof. Snape as to how to be the best teacher. He’s one big role model, who showed us what to do and what not to do. He gave us a picture of both sides. And that’s what the best role models do. Apart from that, Snape’s unwavering love for Lily Potter, even after her death, speaks to the enduring power of love and the lengths one can go to protect those one care about. It reminded me of the significance of forgiveness, redemption, and the capacity for personal growth. Snape’s character arc, encapsulated in this scene, taught me valuable life lessons about the complexities of human nature and the potential for hidden depths within ourselves and others. And that’s when I understood what genuine affection and care meant. And that’s when I understood that I should portray my love to those I care about. How blessed one would be to have such a person in their life, knowingly or unknowingly taking care of them? Harry was damn lucky in that aspect.

Rickman was a star.

I’m only grateful that in the HP universe, Professor Snape shares his birthday with me. And that’s enough for me. Nothing more to ask for. Even after all these years of his sad death, when people ask me, “After all this time?”, on whether I still continue to remember him, my eternal answer was, is, and will every time be “Always!!!”.
